Outline Description of Module
- To develop knowledge of the underlying concepts and principles associated with a range of topics in psychology. To develop students’ appreciation and understanding of the wide variety of experimental techniques used in psychological research.
- To develop students’ appreciation of how the disparate fields within psychology are linked in an understanding of behaviour.
- To develop knowledge of how laboratory and field research is linked to applied uses of psychology.
- The course aims to develop a students’ knowledge of the field of psychology, with specific emphasis on the role of experimental methodologies in developing the scientific approach to the study of behaviour.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
1. Students will become aware of contemporary and historical approaches to experimental psychology.
2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic psychological concepts within the domains of social psychology, cognitive psychology, biological psychology, perception, individual differences and abnormal psychology.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the importance of experimental research in the development of psychological models of behaviour.
4. Students will be able to evaluate contemporary models of some areas of psychology.
5. Students will be able to appreciate how different branches of psychology are needed to understand behaviours, and how these branches are connected.
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered via lectures and small group instruction and discussion.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to analyse and synthesise information in a concise fashion, think flexibly and make connections between different parcels of knowledge, evaluate evidence and its interpretation and sustain a logical argument in both written and oral presentation.
Students will be required to communicate their understanding of the relevant psychological literature in a written essay.
Transferrable skills
Students will develop qualities and skills, such as listening effectively and problem solving, necessary for the exercise of personal responsibilities in education and in a wider context.
How the module will be assessed
Assessments will take the form of coursework and an end-of-module exam.
