Outline Description of Module
This module aims to improve students' translation skills between Spanish and English, going beyond literary and journalistic texts, although these will be also worked upon. It covers topics relating to aspects of Spanish and English speaking culture: science, technology, medicine, law and politics and business, amongst others. It also deals with topics of contemporary relevance, such as, indicatively, political, economic, social and cultural issues, and with contemporary varieties of the language.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
Understand some complex factual, literary and persuasive material and some specialised texts and read longer texts, extracting main points and/or detail.
• Write clearly in a variety of styles and registers with fluency and accuracy.
• Transfer information from spoken and written TL texts into English, indicatively, through translation, summary and commentary, and do the same from English into the TL.
Academic and key skills developed include learning, research and organisational skills; communication and IT skills; intercultural awareness and interpersonal skills.
How the module will be delivered
Two contact hours per week in the format of a language seminar.
Skills that will be practised and developed
- Display a comprehensive understanding of basic translation methods and tools applicable to specialised texts;
- Apply appropriate translation methods to produce the translation of short and simple specialised texts;
- Demonstrate appropriate use of translation tools and resources;
- Demonstrate skills of communication and reflection through participation in the seminars of translation practice.
- Demonstrate comprehension of language, lexis and syntax of both SL and TL.

Two-hour Class Test (100%)
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:
Reassessment will be done through a translation portfolio to be submitted by the student in the August resit period.

- Anglicisms in Spanish.
Along with these topics on translation, lessons will also cover some of the most difficult English grammar topics for Spanish students when and if necessary. These will include:
- Structures after verbs, adjectives and nouns.
- The passive voice.
- Relative clauses.
- Indirect speech.
