Outline Description of Module

The programme is based around practical approaches to translation from Italian into English. Students will work with texts from a variety of sources and registers, including novels, newspaper articles, literary criticism and discursive essays. Students will develop their translation skills through individual and group projects and will practice both long-scale reflective translations and short, time-pressured exercises, in order to develop a range of important skills. Students will receive oral and written feedback on their work and their progress. Translation activities will be framed by discussion of relevant translation theories.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Demonstrate greater skills in translating a range of texts, including prose, poetry, newspaper articles, critical materials, dialect
  • Produce high quality individual translations, with a focus on fluency, accuracy, register and fluidity
  • Work as part of a translating team
  • Work on short, time-pressured exercises, and longer, reflective tasks
  • Use translation theory to reflect on practical exercises

How the module will be delivered

The learning will take place in small group sessions, which will function as workshops and as seminars, in which work will be discussed and feedback given. The workshops will allow students to work as part of a translating team, in addition to developing their individual skills.
