Outline Description of Module
This module offers German Erasmus students an opportunity to improve their command of English and deepen their understanding of British culture by working together in pairs or small groups with British second year students.
50% of the time, you speak English and 50%, you speak German. The respective native speaker adopts the role of a tutor giving feedback. Topics could range from youth cultures, humour, national and regional identities, multiculturalism, protest movements, social attitudes, recent cult books or films, school and university education, cities and regions, to manners and taboos. A list of suggestions for topics will be provided at the beginning of term. Students can also suggest their own topics.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Better understand and use idiomatic and contemporary English
- Speak confidently and idiomatically about a range of topics
- Better understand contemporary British culture and current affairs
How the module will be delivered
Students work in pairs or small groups with British second year students, who attend the course as part of ML7299. Approx. 50% of the teaching time students speak English and 50% students speak German. The respective native speaker adopts the role of a tutor giving feedback.
Skills that will be practised and developed
- Working in a bilingual team
- Communicating confidently in English with English native speakers
- Showing intercultural awareness and improving intercultural communication skills
- Recognising and using different registers
- Researching and structuring information using online and printed material in a foreign language
- Practising analytical and writing skills by writing a 1,500-word essay in English
How the module will be assessed
1,500- word essay in English (+/- 10% is acceptable) - 100% - Week 12 of autumn semester (early January) – essays are submitted online via the Learning Central platform and you do not have to return to Cardiff for submission
