Outline Description of Module

This module provides a practical introduction to the world of business in a Spanish speaking country. It focuses on key organisations such as companies as well as important issues such as advertising, marketing and the wider economy. It also offers valuable training in the preparation of business correspondence and CVs in the Spanish language.

Links with other modules: this module builds and develops on the linguistic knowledge acquired in ML0279 (Spanish Language, Ex Advanced) by consolidating the learning and practice of the language in a specialised, professional and formal context.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of the workings of companies, of the wider economy and of issues such as marketing and advertising in Spanish countries;
  •  Apply linguistic competence and powers of analysis with which to deal competently with most communication in the Spanish language within the business organisation;
  • Work independently and in cooperation with other students;
  • Participate and contribute in discussion of key aspects of the business world in Spain;
  • Apply business vocabulary in business situations; and
  • Communicate and present in the Spanish language.

How the module will be delivered

The module will be taught through a blend of live online classes and guided, interactive online tasks and activities, designed to fulfil the learning outcomes. These will be delivered remotely, and on-campus if the University deems it safe and practicable.

Online lectures will provide the background knowledge of the business world in Spain. This material will feed into interactive seminars where you will probe more deeply into lecture topics and practical communicative skills. This can include any of the following:

Negotiating skills, problem solving and comprehension exercises, business correspondence, group presentations and job applications. You will develop considerably your knowledge of business vocabulary in Spanish. You are expected to complete homework and guided study ahead of seminar classes. 

Skills that will be practised and developed

  • Online lectures will develop your capacity to absorb information, including through note-taking;
  • Seminars will develop the capacity to deploy this information and apply it to texts drawn from the world of business in Spain as well as regularly practising the Spanish language;
  • Seminars and coursework will enable you to develop their vocabulary, improve your writing skills in a range of areas (letters, emails, reports, CVs etc.), improve your listening, speaking, and presentation skills in the Spanish language;
  • Through coursework you will demonstrate your knowledge of the world of business in Spain; and
  • Other academic and key skills developed include research and organisational skills, communication and basic word-processing skills, intercultural awareness as well as interpersonal, negotiation and team-working skills.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:

Students who fail the module overall will sit a portfolio in the August resit period for 100% of the module, capped at 40%
