Outline Description of Module
The reading module allows students to acquire knowledge of a particular area of mathematics, whilst developing the skills that are needed to study mathematics in a more independent manner.
The module is also designed to enable MMath students to study designated subjects in mathematics which are not covered by any of the lecture modules that are to be offered in a given academic year.
Prior to each academic semester, the subject area for any proposed reading module will be announced to students, together with an indicative syllabus. The choice that may be offered will depend on the range of other lecture modules that are being made available to MMath students.
If they so wish, students can write to the MMath co-ordinator to suggest some possible areas of study that would be of likely interest to them. Such suggestions may then help to inform the selection of the contents for any potential reading module. However, the nature of the reading modules that might actually be offered will depend strongly on the availability of teaching staff with particular areas of mathematical expertise, who could be able to act as moderators.
The role of the reading module moderator is to provide students with support for their reading, including the setting of mathematical problems that are to be solved. The moderator also sets the written examination paper.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
The specific knowledge and understanding that will obtained by completing the module will be strongly dependent on the subject areas of advanced mathematics that are studied through the prescribed reading.
How the module will be delivered
You will be guided through learning activities appropriate to your module, which may include:
- Weekly face to face classes (e.g. labs, lectures, exercise classes)
- Electronic resources to support the learning (e.g. videos, exercise sheets, lecture notes, quizzes)
Students are also expected to undertake at least 150 hours of self-guided study throughout the duration of the module, including preparation of formative assessments.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Enhanced capacity to study and gain an understanding of advanced mathematical topics, by means of independent reading.
