Outline Description of Module

This module will clarify the need for students to study and critically analyse historic architecture.  Students will develop an understanding of the broad stylistic typography of Western architecture, differentiating attributes and their socio-cultural and technological underpinnings, and be able to convey understanding of the interaction between environmental, cultural, and technological factors influencing the final form of buildings.  In the module students will critically assess the fitness for purpose, with a focus on energy efficiency, of heritage buildings, and develop an energy renovation strategy that preserves the architectural attributes of a heritage building.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  1. Distinguish between the main styles and types of Western architecture from the beginnings of civilisation to the present day.
  2. Analyse and contextualise the major monuments of Western architectural history.
  3. Comprehend the relationship between architecture and the social, cultural, religious, geographical, and technological contexts at different times and in different places.
  4. Analyse and describe buildings with respect to their formal architectural characteristics.
  5. Write an energy renovation strategy for a heritage building, critically analysing and comparing various options.

How the module will be delivered

The module will be delivered through a blend of face-to-face classes and tutorials, as well as online teaching and learning material and guided study.

Also, concepts studied within each lecture will be illustrated through a short (25mn) documentary elaborating on the formal analysis of an iconic historic building.

Each lecture will include a workshop session where students can interact with their peers and tutors in the context of the group and individual coursework.

A weekly lecture structure will be shared with students detailing teaching and learning content and activities, providing course work guidance, and indicative time commitment and relationship to the module assessment.

Skills that will be practised and developed

  • Work effectively as an individual, and collaboratively within a group.

  • Communicate complex ideas effectively

  • Conduct an options appraisal on various energy renovation strategies for a heritage building

How the module will be assessed

The module is assessed through a group and individual coursework. The groupwork assessment contributes 40% towards the final mark and is moderated via Peer Assessment. It is based on a building to be allocated to each group.  The groupwork will involve conducting a Formal Analysis of the allocated building to address both compositional and spatial patterns.  (LO4

There will be opportunity for feedback on progress on group assessment regularly throughout the module.

The Essay contributes 60% towards the final mark and will involve developing a proposal for a future renovation of the group allocated building, focused on functional, aesthetic and sustainability considerations. (LO1,2,3,5).
