Outline Description of Module

This module will examine and use the idea of the reflective practitioner, with particular reference to planning. It will discuss the epistemological, ethical and institutional sources and implications of the idea. Students will be required to relate it to their day to day lives, including their working lives if appropriate.

 

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  1. Critically discuss the idea of reflective practice

  2. Explain the implications of reflective practice for all aspects of professional life, including the ethical.

  3. Practise reflection in relation to their own experiences, particularly in work.

How the module will be delivered

The module will be delivered by supported independent study. This will involve weekly interaction between student and tutor about specified ideas and readings

Skills that will be practised and developed

Whilst studying this module, students will practise and develop a number of skills.  Students will practise and develop an ability to read critically, and the ability to discuss abstract ideas related to planning. They will be able to reflect upon their own practices, including work. Whilst not actually carrying out independent research in this module, students will be expected to explore relevant literature, and will be guided and supported in doing this.

Students are permitted to be reassessed (usually once) in a module which they have failed, in line with course regulations. The reassessment will usually take place during the summer.

Syllabus content

The syllabus will focus on the various ways reflective practice may be understood; the usefulness and limitations of the idea; the implications of the idea for the various dimensions of professional life of the planner, including the ethical. Key topics covered are :

  • Interpretations of the notion of reflection

  • Reflection and epistemology: salvaging professionalism ?

  • Reflection and personal development

  • How central should reflection be ? – evaluating other key ideas in professional life
