Outline Description of Module

This course is highly interactive, and provides excellent coverage of the essential knowledge, skills and techniques needed for success as a leader in any field. This course is taught through a mix of online learning and classroom-based learning,  The course combines theoretical knowledge and concepts on Leadership Styles with practical Leadership Skills. 

On completion of the module a student should be able to

Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Apply theoretical knowledge of the leadership topics covered on the course, to a range of practical problems and situations provided throughout the course.
  • Demonstrate awareness of different approaches to leadership via class debates, role plays and presentations.
  • Evaluate leadership theories and reflect on your own leadership styles in a variety of situations, through class tasks and reflection.

The aim and course outcomes focus on a student’s ability to apply the theoretical knowledge that they have gained of a subject area into practical situations that may occur within the workplace. To help them achieve these outcomes, the learning and teaching methods shall be conducted through a range of tasks including group work, presentations, class discussions, role play, problem questions and written tasks.  

How the module will be delivered

Alternate weeks online and in the classroom.

Intellectual Skills:

  • Demonstrate ability to research leadership styles and apply them to a given problem scenarios.
  • Compare and contrast leadership styles.
  • Reflect on own leadership styles and identify areas for development.

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  • Identifying and using appropriate communication methods to present information.
  • Demonstrate ability to use persuasive language which is appropriate to the target audience.
  • Demonstrate ability to challenge preferred leadership practices and methods through reflection activities.

Transferable Skills:

  • Development of higher level verbal and physical communication skills.
  • Research skills.
  • Presentation Skills.
  • Use of ICT to carry out research and communicate effectively with others.

How the module will be assessed

How the module will be assessed

Formative assessment on the course will occur through a combination of peer feedback, multiple choice quizzes on Blackboard, group debates which are designed to assist learners to place the theoretical knowledge learned on the course into the practice and to link their own workplace experiences to the theories discussed.

The summative assessment will consist of an essay based on theories and concepts of Essential Leadership styles and skills.
