Outline Description of Module
This course is aimed at students who have a basic knowledge of Arabic, or who have completed Arabic for Improvers I (CE4365), and who wish to further improve their communication skills in oral, aural and written form.
This module will enable students to use a broader, but still limited range of oral, aural and written skills in Arabic, sufficient for practical needs in simple everyday situations. Students will also develop an understanding of the culture of Arabic speaking countries.
METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework (20%) 2 pieces of text production
ii) Oral continuous assessment (40%) iii) Aural class test (40%)

On completion of the module a student should be able to
Knowledge and Understanding: - show their ability to use simple phrases and sentences by talking about
themselves, their family and everyday life.
- demonstrate their ability to recognise familiar words and simple phrases in
the target language by taking part in role-plays and similar learning tasks.
- demonstrate their ability to understand the gist and extract information from simple texts by adequately completing listening tasks.
- demonstrate a knowledge of simple grammatical structures and phrases by writing short texts.
Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to catch the main point in short, clear and simple spoken messages, announcements and dialogues.
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities.
- read simple texts and find specific predictable information in simple everyday
material.
- demonstrate their ability to write short, simple texts relating to matters in areas
of immediate need using simple sentence structures and vocabulary
How the module will be delivered
Students will actively participate in dialogues, group discussions and other interactive language exercises. Tapes and authentic work-sheets will enhance students active and passive language learning.

How the module will be assessed
Coursework (20%) and Written class test (20%) to test students ability of understanding simple texts and produce written responses and translate simple sentences.
Oral continuous assessment (40%) to test students ability to produce oral dialogues in Arabic
Aural class test (20%) to test students basic understanding of familiar day to day life

Syllabus content
The alphabets and their different forms in writing, long and short vowels,
doubling, nunation, verbs in their different forms with different tenses and
pronouns,
Rules of writing ( Hamza..),
adjectives ,pronounces, interrogatives, prepositions, possessives, and reading and writing practice,
all the previous topics are further expanded and will include variations for:
greetings, your personal profile, family tree, numbers, days of a week, name of
months, telling the time, colours, town features, road directions, asking about
direction, parts of the body, cloths and costume, food , fruits and vegetables,
hobbies and names of objects,
Some topics are being covered though a listening procedure such as, in the
airport, in the hotel, in the restaurant, in your house.
