Outline Description of Module
Effective project and programme management is required to implement large scale changes in organisations. This module aims to provide an appreciation of the difficulties of managing large scale software development projects and considers how the principles, tools and techniques of project and change management can overcome these difficulties. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills that are key to project management professional qualifications such as PRINCE2.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Appreciate how the tools and techniques of project and change management can be applied to the effective management of projects.
- Select and apply appropriate practices associated with the key themes of project management.
- Evaluate various approaches to quality management and discuss how these can be applied to large-scale software development projects.
- Discuss how legal, ethical and social issues affect decision making in the context of project and change management and provide justified recommendations for addressing these issues.
How the module will be delivered
Weekly lectures will introduce students to the key themes and practices. Discussion and exercise classes immediately following will be used to reinforce the theory and to explore these themes in more depth using case studies or group exercises. These will be scheduled as three 2 hours sessions per week.
External speakers from Business and Industry will demonstrate how appropriate principles and practice are applied in the real-world, where possible.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Though coursework, group discussions and exercises students will practise and develop the skills of Project planning, cost estimation, scheduling, risk assessment and management. These skills are a key to project management professional qualifications such as PRINCE2.
How the module will be assessed
Coursework: The coursework will allow the student to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills and to apply the principles taught in lectures.
Exam: A written exam (2 h) will test the student's knowledge and understanding as elaborated under the learning outcomes.
